WhistleSmith Good and Plenty Low G Whistle
The Good and Plenty whistle is the result of receiving so many requests for a back to basics whistle. Many folks have asked for an easy to clean whistle in G with accurate tuning, no tuning slide, and the smoothest bore for good sound that is possible.
The following letter gave me the name of the whistle and was the basis for making the Good and Plenty Low G. If all goes well, there will be a series of the Good and Plenty whistles in all keys including the Traveler A mentioned in this email.
I received this email from a whistler in Pennsylvania who lives near Lancaster in the midst of Amish country. Here is an excerpt of his letter.
"I recently was waiting for my wife to do some shopping in a road side furniture store near Lancaster, PA. I got tired of sitting in the car , so I ambled over to where there were some rocking chairs for sale and took my whistle along for company. I bought the Traveler, Low A in October and I carry it on the road while I call on accounts. There were no customers outside the shop, so I settled in to play a tune or two and probably had been playing a full ten minutes when I noticed I had an audience of two Amish
children of about ten. I stopped playing and said hello and they responded that they liked my music and settled in to hear another piece. I had played a couple of my favorite songs when their father showed up and with a nod invited me to play some more. I played for a bit more and then took a break and showed the two children the whistle and how it played. The father looked the whistle over and asked me if it had a name and I replied it was a WhistleSmith. He smiled and said " I think you should call it 'the
Good and Plenty!' because it plays plenty well and good too!" Thought you would enjoy hearing that you have an Amish admirer of your whistle. As you can tell I think this a great whistle to take on the road too.
The Good and Plenty Low G is made with a single piece body of ultra white pipe with a dark grey poly plug and removable top cap for the easiest possible cleaning.Whistle is 16" long, made for small hands fingering (ladies extra small glove size),comes apart for easy cleaning, and has a rich, full sound with plenty of volume.
Whistle is for a right handed player and has offset fingering holes for comfort and easy playing. This whistle is perfect for playing in the Key of G, C, or Am with no cross fingering to learn. This instrument will stay in tune in cold weather and plays great even in the wind. This is a take any where whistle that will play in all kinds of weather and temperature conditions.
Whistle comes with an 11" x 17" color coded fingering chart and whistle care and playing tips sheet. Whistle is White with silver striping as shown in photo.

What is the difference between a Thumb Post and a Thumb Ring?
I recently received a note from a music teacher who instructs both children and adults on playing the whistle. She was not familiar with the thumb ring and asked if I would explain how a thumb ring was constructed and how it works versus a thumb post.
I do not make a thumb post, however some makers include them with their whistles. A thumb post snaps onto your whistle and will keep your whistle from rolling and falling off a table. However, a thumb post has little value for holding your whistle. Thumb posts are generally injected molded and tend to break if snapped on and off the whistle frequently.
The WhistleSmith thumb ring is made from schedule 40 pipe and hand riveted together to make a very strong clip and ring combination. There are 20 steps involved in making a single thumb ring and each step is done by hand. WhistleSmith thumb rings are made to last, but can be easily repaired with common tools if necessary.
Here are some advantages to using a WhistleSmith thumb ring.
1. The WhistleSmith thumb ring is a full circle ring for your thumb. The ring swivels on a clip which snaps onto your whistle to allow movement and angle adjustment to the ring for the most comfortable playing position.
2. You have a solid grip on your whistle without having to practice fingering positions when using the thumb ring.
3. The thumb ring prevents your whistle from rolling off the counter or table top if you lay it down.
4. The thumb ring lets you hang your whistle on a cup hook or a wall pin when you are not playing. This provides a secure storage for your whistle and keeps it out of harms way.
5. Playing with a thumb ring improves your technical skills by eliminating learning hand grips when playing with all the holes open on your whistle.
6. You will not drop your whistle when you are playing because your lips anchor the end of your whistle and the thumb ring hold the body securely.
7. Confidence is a large part of playing your whistle. You need to know your whistle is held securely and cannot be dropped by accident when playing in front of an audience!
8. You can use a thumb ring on either hand. Place the thumb ring where you like it best. You can use a thumb ring on both hands at once if you wish!
This is The WhistleSmith Thumb ring that snaps to the barrel of the whistle and rotates for most comfortable playing position. Some
folks would like a Thumb ring for both hands so I am listing them as an individual item. Low whistles and flutes take a large ring and Hi whistles and flutes use a small ring. WhistleSmith Thumb rings are made to fit Whistlesmith whistles and flutes. Pick Thumb ring size to fit your whistle and Add it to Your Cart. We will ship your Thumb ring with your whistle order

Ultra Bb Whistle
When folks in Maine decide that something is exceptional, they generally say "It's Wicked Good"
The Ultra Bb is one Wicked Good Whistle!
This whistle has been developed over the past two years. It is a common sense approach to several vexing problems that face a whistlesmith when developing a whistle that can be reproduced in numbers and retain tuning and playing profiles when played under a variety of conditions.
After observing how whistle players actually place and play a whistle mouthpiece, I noted that the small size mouthpiece on D, C and Bb whistles in general use, had some major drawbacks. The original design of the mouthpieces on these small whistles was developed to fit the small diameter tubing necessary to make the higher pitched whistles.
What if you made the mouthpiece larger and took away the inclination to place the mouthpiece in any other position other than against the lips where it belongs?
When a beginning player begins to play the small mouthpiece, they place too much of the mouthpiece into their mouth. Instead of blowing air into the whistle, this position blows saliva into the wind way and control of the whistle due to its small size is marginal at best. After questioning people who had played the Straight Shot mouthpiece on the Whistlesmith Low A and G whistles extensively, I got the impression that a larger mouthpiece would not only play better, but would feel more
substantial and give the smaller whistles a better balance.
I have had great success with the Straight Shot mouthpiece design and I tried a variety of ways to make it work for the smaller sized tubing of the Ultra Bb whistle. After several starts on the mouthpiece, I was delayed in further experiments with more urgent whistle work and had to put the mouthpiece for the Ultra Bb to one side in a box. I worked on the mouthpiece as time permitted, but the answer to making it play correctly continued to be elusive and time consuming and I would lay
it away again.
While working on the Low F whistle which incorporates a small bore with a low whistle key, I developed a new concept mouthpiece using a tapered ramp with a round flute hole that really works well and is very stable when played. This style mouthpiece can be modified to produce more or less air flow and the wind way is easily milled to a variety of configurations.
What does all this mean? It means a common style of mouthpiece can be used to make the entire line of whistles and they will be stable and easily played. This is a Wicked Good Idea! and now it works!
So, now we have figured out how to make a larger mouthpiece play correctly on the small bore whistle and here is what it does.
Stable air flow in the mouthpiece makes the whistle blow easier, longer and with more volume.
Larger cut on the wind way means saliva buildup is no longer a problem.
Flute style hole means mellow, rounder sound with more strength and clarity on each individual note.
Stable octave bounce from low octave to high octave without squeaks and breaks.
Tuning is very accurate and stable in both octaves using this mouthpiece.
What 50 Test Players Said about the new Ultra design.
Test players of the new Ultra design agreed that the instrument felt more substantial to play and gave them more control using the larger mouthpiece.
Testers noted improved sound volume and better low end of first octave.
Testers also judged the appearance of the Ultra design to be well balanced and clean in appearance by using the mouthpiece as the tuning slide and eliminating the tuning collar.
Testers said that the Ultra was very stable to play and twenty testers said it was exceptional in balance between octaves.
The tuning head slide combination was judged to be not only an economical solution to tuning, but was easy to use and reset and provided a very good feature for cleaning the whistle.
After considerable playing and input from testers, the snap off top of the mouthpiece was changed to a slide off top with more grab to prevent it shifting accidentally after it was set in place and adjusted.
When this change was made, the test group played instruments with the change and they agreed the mouthpiece was more efficient to clean and play with the new slide off top.
The wraparound Whistlesmith decal was made to fit the smaller diameter tone body section while still retaining whistle key in bottom of diamond trademark.
If you play your whistle outdoors then the Ultra Bb is for you! You can play this whistle in a gale force wind and it will not miss a note. This is a great whistle to take camping, hiking or playing around the fire.
I have improved the Straight Shot mouthpiece in shape and it feels silky smooth against your lip. The mouthpiece has a bevel on the top to fit your lip when the whistle is played in a variety of positions. The tuning slide is part of the mouthpiece and is very easy to use.
Whistle is fourteen inches long, is well balanced and feels substantial in your hand.
The Ultra Bb lets you play in the Keys of Bb and Eb and Cm without having to learn any tricky cross fingering. This is a very handy whistle to add to your collection.
Straight Shot mouthpiece is made of Bristol white polymer and has a dark gray plug from IMG plastics. The mouthpiece contains no wood or metal and the top slides completely off for cleaning and can be adjusted to best playing position on the top and bottom octaves.
The Ultra Bb has a rich, full sound you'll enjoy, with balanced high and low octaves. There is plenty of volume for any type of playing.
Colors for the Ultra Bb are, Jet Black, Deep Maroon, Dark Green, Dark Brown, Magenta or Dark Navy Blue. Striping is in silver.
Whistle comes with an 11" x 17" color coded fingering chart and whistle tips and instructions sheet

The finger holes on this whistle are offset on the bottom hole and make playing the instrument very comfortable. You must specify if you want a right or left handed whistle.
The tone body has been counter bored in the foot to give the bottom notes on the lower octave louder volume and better balance to the instrument. The Low F lets you play in the Keys of F and Bb and Gm without having to learn any tricky cross fingering. This is a very handy whistle to add to your collection.
Whistle comes apart for easy cleaning at the slide and breaks down into two pieces for travel. Straight Shot mouthpiece is made of Bristol white polymer and has a grey poly plug from IMG plastics. Low A "Traveler" Whistle
When folks in Maine admire something and decide it is exceptional, they generally say "It's Wicked Good"
"The Traveler" is one Wicked Good Whistle because it fits the bill when you are on the road.
If you play your whistle outdoors, this is the model for you! You can play this whistle in a gale force wind and it will not miss a note. The Traveler will stay in tune in cold weather and the mouthpiece can be easily rotated to the bottom of whistle for playing in the wind. This is a great whistle to take camping, hiking or playing around the fire. I have played this whistle from Northern Maine to Florida and everywhere in between and it is a great size to carry when you are traveling or on vacation.
I have improved the Straight Shot mouthpiece in shape and it feels silky smooth against your lip. The mouthpiece has a bevel on the top to fit your lip when the whistle is played in a variety of positions. The tuning slide is made of copper for strength and slides efficiently without sticking. There are no rubber O rings to break and lubricating the slide is optional.
The tuning slide clip is slotted on the back so you can see the amount of adjustment in the slide when tuning to another whistle. It also strengthens the slide and keeps the whistle aligned when rotating the mouthpiece to the down position. If you do not wish to use the tuning slide clip, it is easily removed.
Whistle is fifteen inches long, made for small hands fingering (ladies extra small glove size), Folks with large hands will find the fingering distances to be extra comfortable and easy to play. The finger holes on this whistle are not offset on the bottom hole (everything is in a straight line) and are suitable for left handed players, exchange hand players (right hand top, left hand bottom) and make playing the instrument when your hands are stiff more comfortable.
The tone body has a hand reamed bottom bore to give the bottom notes on the lower octave louder volume and better balance to the instrument.
The Traveler lets you play in the Keys of A and D and B minor without having to learn any tricky cross fingering. This is a very handy whistle to add to your collection.
Whistle comes apart for easy cleaning at the slide and breaks down into two pieces for travel. Straight Shot mouthpiece is made of Bristol white polymer pipe and has a clear acrylic plug from TAP plastics. The mouthpiece contains no wood or metal and the top slides completely off for cleaning and can be adjusted to best playing position on the top and bottom octaves.
The Traveler has a rich, full sound you'll enjoy, with balanced high and low octaves. There is plenty of volume for any type of playing.
Whistle is White with silver striping as shown in photo.
Whistle comes with an 11" x 17" color coded fingering chart and whistle care and playing tips sheet.
Check out the new Sideshooter mouthpiece that converts this whistle to an Auto Flute! Available now for only $24.95 in the store.

How to Use The Whistlesmith Crisis Whistle
Blow into mouthpiece slot as hard as you can while covering the stringed end of the whistle with your finger. Fully covering whistle end produces a LOUD BLAST. Partially covering whistle end produces EXTREMELY LOUD BLAST. Whistle can not fill with water or freeze up in cold weather. Whistle will always blow when you have a crisis. Be considerate of others eardrums and blow only at a distance or out of doors.
-
A loud blast on this whistle is a great deterrent to people who want to do you harm. It attracts attention immediately to your problem from everyone around you. Bad people do bad things, so carry your crisis whistle with you when you are shopping, jogging or walking, or going over to the neighbors for an evening chat. Most crisis happen close to home and lots of them can be avoided if someone just knows that you have a problem.
-
Use your whistle when you are boating or going swimming. Because the crisis whistle is hollow, it can never fill with water and will always be ready to signal for help. The whistle has no parts to freeze up inside, so it functions in winter as well as in warm weather.
-
The whistle is easy to blow. It has been tested by five year old children and by eighty four year old grandmothers. A few minutes practicing blowing the whistle may save your life or summon help for someone else who is in trouble. The whistle has a handy loop string to attach it to a button hole, belt loop, life jacket, or your car keys. Just thread the loop through a button hole and drop the whistle through the end loop and your whistle stays with you.
Some of the activities where you need a whistle and probably don’t realize it...
Boating
It's the law if you are boating to carry a signaling device. Remember this whistle will always work, because it won’t fill with water and quit blowing. Jogging and walking You need to be able to call for help and assistance if you need it.
Swimming You may save your life or the life of someone else by summoning help.
Fishing and Hunting
A whistle can bring help if you are not visible to search and rescue and it lets your companions know where you are even if they are out sight.
Snowmobiling and Four Wheeling. It makes sense to be able to get attention when your machine isn’t running or you are stuck and need assistance.
Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing. A twisted ankle can turn your fun into a call for help. Always carry your crisis whistle when outdoors in the winter.
Help Keep your Children Safe
Make sure that your children carry a crisis whistle with them in their school gear or backpack. Thousands of children disappear every year when a simple whistle blast for help might save them. A crisis whistle is the best gift you can give to those friends who are leaving home to be on their own or attending college for the first time
